Download apps (VPP) Lightspeed - new MDM product is available -
we signed up for the beta test. The current version is designed for education environments
It has a hierarchical approach (district / building / department / class etc.)
Integrated with app store - can upload vpp spreadsheets.
Future version will allows teachers to manage devices with MyBigCampus.
Future - will support Android
Documentation Wiki
New version added Global Proxy support - allows us to make the iPads go through the Lightspeed filter whether iPads are located in or out of the school buildings.
This is the MDM we decided to use (mostly due to the ability to use our filter)

Note: Cisco plans to purchase Meraki - Cisco plans to create a new division called Cisco’s Cloud Networking Group led by Sanjit Biswas, Meraki’s CEO. This group will operate independently with the intent to preserve Meraki’s culture of innovation, fully integrated business model and low TCO.

We chose this solution since it allowed us to use the MDM profile to ensure that devices always use our school filter.
With iOS 7, version 3 of the Lightspeed MDM was released (fall 2013); as of March 2014 we are still waiting for migration to new version.

Decisions to Make
How to manage iPads and how students will use iPads
Determine whether to use one device per student, or students share devices [cart in classroom with each student using one device - shared among all students of one teacher, small number of devices in each classroom shared by all students]
Link iPads to one or more computers using iTunes (useful for when a small set of iPads stays together (maybe a cart of 30, or a set of 5 for a classroom, etc.)
Use Apple Configurator to supervise iPads (useful for 1:1; can be used for cart based shared computers, but takes time) - also use MDM for filter and other management
Apple’s new method - use MDM only (we have not tried this since it just became available)
MDM solution to use - Meraki, Lightspeed, other?
Tested Meraki and trial version of Lightspeed

For damaged devices:
With Configurator rename (remove student's name, keep Loaner name)
In Feb. 2014, Apple announced a program that allows organizations to enroll devices and manage them without IT staff touching the device - without using Configurator We could still use our Lightspeed MDM. We should look into this for the future. It also looks like we can enroll devices we already have, although I haven’t determined if they will allow us to re-use the vpp app codes for the class of 2016. Here are some links to information about the new program:

New procedure for students turning in iPads (broken or student withdrawing from school)
Turn off passcode
Turn off Find My iPad
Wait until end of day or next day to erase iPad if needed
For withdrawn students:
Erase iPad
With Configurator, unsupervise iPad

For damaged devices:
With Configurator rename (remove student's name, keep Loaner name)

Set up spreadsheet / mail merge (in Google Docs) for redemption codes for 9th Graders
Notes from the school year:
Basic Tasks
Help students with Setup
Setup email
Make sure freshmen get email with Redemption Codes for paid apps
Setup iTunes Account and verify
Download 'Scan'
Scan QR Cod that links to list of common apps (download later)
Make sure they turn on Find My iPad
Help students backup files
Setup iPads for new students and collect returned iPads from students who withdraw.
'Fix' Disabled iPad (wrong passcode entered too many times)
Sometimes just Refreshing this with Configurator will work
Sometimes iPad needs to be Unsupervised and set up from the beginning.
Other ideas
iOS 7
Students were able to update their own iPads
Now that students update most apps (except 10th grade paid apps), it is much easier. It is still challenging to update Notability etc. Just doing this as needed.
Configurator 1.4 and OS X 10.8 are required for upgrading (as of 9/25/13 this is not working properly. More info:

Year 2 Notes
We started preparing for this as soon as school ended in June 2013. We were also preparing laptops for the 11th and 12th graders. Here are the steps we followed:
Sort iPads / charger & cable envelopes into carts
Order cases for new iPads
When to replace displays (how much damage) - let them keep minor damage
Check with Apple about removing apps from configurator so they can be used for each student - yes
New iPads -

Return to large box for storage
